There are two important figures characterizing of the development of Germany contemporary art.
One is Joseph Beuys, representing Performance Art and Conceptual art. 
The other is  Georg Baselitz  representing Neo-expressionism by his traditional form of painting.

Since the mid-1960s, Baselitz has attempted to create paintings using an "image inversion" method.
Such paintings are characterized by the upside-down figures appear to be rising, gravity seems reversed, 
strong colors and broad, and rough strokes rendering a unique image.
